“The two ‘lesbian’ films that bookended the dates of the Production Code Administration’s reign―Queen Christina (Rouben Mamoulian, 1933) and The Killing of Sister George (Robert Aldrich, 1968)―both evoke definitions of lesbianism as gender inversion (and thus as visible difference) that would largely disappear from Hollywood film during the intervening period.
